Keratoconus Surgery. A transplant procedure in which a circular area of surface eye tissue is removed from a healthy donor cornea and transferred to a recipient. In some people with keratoconus the cornea becomes scarred with advanced disease or wearing contact lenses becomes difficult.
While the cause is unknown it is believed to. Laser vision correction surgery lasik is dangerous if you have keratoconus. In some people with keratoconus the cornea becomes scarred with advanced disease or wearing contact lenses becomes difficult.
In more severe cases a scarring or a circle may be seen within the cornea.
A scarred cornea causes worsening vision problems and may require cornea transplant surgery. In keratoconus when the cornea becomes dangerously thin or when sufficient vision can no longer be achieved by contact lenses due to steepening of the cornea scaring or lens intolerance a corneal transplant may be the only option. However the changes to the cornea will make it impossible for the eye to focus without eyeglasses or contact lenses. Keratoconus does not make people go blind.
